NCIC seeks to foster peace in the North Rift

In Eldoret, the Cohesion Commission has now organized a special session with senior police officers on how to spot and act on hate speech. However, as our North Rift reporter found out, many residents of the region are yet to be convinced about the ongoing peace efforts.

Police, NCIC To Clamp Down On Hate Speech

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere says the police will work closely with the National Cohesion and Integration Commission in clamping down on hate speech during the electioneering period. Iteere said the police were now equipped with monitoring gadgets to ensure they gather water tight evidence against suspects of hate speech. He was speaking at the launch of a training exercise for police officers and the NCIC on hate speech. Willis Raburu reports

NCIC investigates three vernacular musicians

Three songs sang in the Kikuyu language are on the radar of the National Cohesion And Integration Commission. The songs have been flagged as inciting and the commission is investigating possible hate speech in the songs. The commission is awaiting an official copy of the translation before deciding on the next course of action and as NTV's Sheila Sendeyo reports, lyrics of the song have angered even those whose views the singers purport to represent.

Politicians accuse DPP of ignoring NCIC

In what appears to be an attempt to drive a wedge between the cohesion commission and the Director of Public Prosecutions, politicians suspected of hate speech now say the dpp is acting against the wishes of the NCIC. Limuru MP Peter Mwathi whom the DPP wants charged for hate speech has echoed the sentiments of Minister Jamleck Kamau, accusing the DPP of vendetta. Linda Ogutu reports on this latest tactic, that could further jeopardize prosecution of hate speech suspects.
